Welcome to our Student Council for the 2025/2026 academic year at St Joseph’s N.S., Kingscourt!

Our Student Council plays a vital role in school life, giving pupils a strong and positive voice within our community. It empowers students to share their ideas, highlight important issues, and work together to create meaningful improvements throughout the school. By encouraging teamwork, leadership, and communication, the council helps make our school a more inclusive, supportive, and enjoyable place for everyone.

The Yellow Flag and Multicultural Awareness

This year, the Student Council has focused on the important theme of multicultural awareness. Through this work, pupils are learning to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and build a deeper understanding of different cultures within our school community. As part of this journey, the Student Council has begun the process of applying for the Yellow Flag Programme, which promotes equality and takes a strong stand against racism. Achieving the Yellow Flag is a two-year process, involving collaboration, learning, and meaningful action across the whole school. We are excited to be part of this initiative and look forward to continuing our work in creating a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for all.

We celebrated Show Racism the Red Card Day in February, which was promoted by the student council. We walked to school together and wore red to show our support. Throughout the week, we took part in lessons that focused on understanding our differences and recognising that everyone is unique, while also learning the importance of treating everyone with respect and kindness.

Fundraisers

  1. The Student Council is also actively involved in promoting environmental responsibility and supporting worthwhile causes. As part of this, they organise a battery recycling initiative in aid of Barretstown, raising funds for this wonderful children’s charity. Through this effort, students not only help protect the environment but also contribute to making a positive difference in the lives of children and families in need.
  2. The Student Council also plays an active role in promoting sustainability within our school. They organise the recycling of plastic bottles, helping to reduce waste while raising valuable funds to support our school community. This initiative encourages all pupils to take responsibility for the environment and shows how small actions can make a big difference.

School Life & Events

The Student Council also plays an important role in supporting and enhancing school life through involvement in a wide range of events. These experiences help students develop strong leadership skills, a sense of responsibility, and a spirit of teamwork. Throughout the year, council members assist with many key occasions in our school calendar, including STEM Day, Christmas plays, Grandparents’ Day, Pancake Tuesday celebrations, Infant Introduction, and Graduation. Their contribution helps each event run smoothly and ensures they are enjoyable and memorable for everyone involved.

Making our School a better place

The Student Council is dedicated to making St Joseph’s N.S. a better place for all pupils. They take part in litter-picking throughout the school year, helping to keep the school environment clean and well cared for. They also support younger students during yard time by helping to organise and lead games, encouraging inclusion, friendship, and fun.
